This source is primary in nature because it is a newspaper publication and because of the date of its publication--1956.

This almanac was not focused on the Civil Rights Movement, but rather the civil rights of many groups-ethnic and non-ethnic. This book gave good insight on the nonviolent foundation the Montgomery Bus Boycott was based on.

This document is a primary source because it is an actual view through the eyes of the blacks who participated in the boycott or lived in the city at the time.

This interview was slightly longer than other interviews Colvin had done. Because all information gathered from this interview is from Claudette herself, I consider the interview to be a primary source.

Because this source was published in the 1950s near the time of the boycott, it is considered to be primary.

This almanac was not focused on the Civil Rights Movement, but rather the civil rights of many groups-ethnic and non-ethnic. This book gave good insight on the nonviolent foundation the Montgomery Bus Boycott was based on.

Claudette Colvin: Turning Point of the Civil Rights Movement

This summer, when browsing the book store shelves, I came across
a book about a young girl, Claudette Colvin, whose amazing story was
overshadowed. This girl stood up for what she believed in, but was never given
full credit. When I was given the opportunity to do a project on someone or
something that I thought changed the course of history, I came back to this
courageous girl. I decided she would be the perfect unsung hero to base my
project on. Because this girl’s story has to do with the Civil Rights Movement,
a subject I was already very familiar with, I felt that I would be able to
present a strong finished product.
I began my research in search of at least six primary sources. I
used some reference material in my school library as well as online resources
that contained old newspaper articles and other primary sources from the time
period of my project. I organized all of my research on note cards that were
organized in a number system corresponding with whichever source the research
card came from. As I found new sources, I began making an annotated bibliography
so as not to put it off to the last minute. After, I found enough primary
sources, I then started looking for at least six secondary sources to round out
the research for my project. After all the sources were found and the research
gathered, I added the sources to my annotated bibliography and began planning
the development of my project.
I chose to create my project as a website because I felt that it
would be a dynamic and modern way to present information to an audience. I also
felt that my project would benefit from the multimedia aspect of a website
(video clips, pictures, music). I first did some website planning. I built the
website one page at a time. I found pictures that I felt would be powerful and
help tell the story of my topic. I then created a timeline to give a brief
overview of the time period. I then added a video interview to my website. After
getting all the information on the website, I got three people to give me
constructive criticism that I could use to improve my project. After this
process was finished, I began brainstorming a brief oration that I could give
while presenting the project.
My project relates to the theme of ‘Turning Points in History’
because of the tremendous impact my subject had on the Civil Rights Movement. If
Claudette Colvin had not taken a stand, Rosa Parks may not have had the courage
to do it herself. If Claudette had not been so instrumental in the Browder v.
Gayle court case that ended segregation, the NAACP may not have won the case.
Segregation would, quite possibly, still exist
today.
